EQ:What area has the strongest whaling area in Japan

Whaling in Taiji happened in the 17^th centuries. People who did whaling was considered a job and got paid. In 1606 they organized a group for hunting whales.  Once they catched them they would shoot them with harpoons and lances. In the recent days they would get nets and tract them and once the whales got tired they would Taiji would hunt bigger whales, and smaller whales if possible. Bigger whales they hunted were because they had the nutrients they wanted with had some fat and put it in hamburgers.

Right whales, humpback whales, fin, minke and gray whales were primarily hunted.^[15] Blue whales, sei, Bryde's and sperm whales were however also taken when possible

Take action piece

For our project we had to find something we could do about our problem,so we emailed the Japan Whaling Association and the Internation Whaling Commision along with our teachers our blog, we also created the blog, found information pictures and resources,created links to websites with different perspectives, we found a current article, we created a timeline, suggested solutions, and filmed a video with us playing different perspectives (we couldn't put it on the blog though).

People eat whales all the time it is vet nasty and they should stop.

Solutions to whaling

1. Japan can find a substitute for whale
2. A school in Japan that teaches kids that whaling should be stopped
3. Creating new jobs, like finding renewable energy, until the whale population goes back up again and whaling in smaller amounts

Who started whaling in Japan

            For this question I could not find very accurate information. All I found was a man named Jura Oka started it in Japan. He got his technique from the Norwegians around the end of the 19^th century. However this information is only from one perspective, which comes from the Sea Shepard.

What do people get out of whaling??

Nowdays people go and hunt whales because they can earn a lot of cash from the meat of the whales. They sell the meat for a very big price and they earn a lot. Also, people kill whales for their blubber. Whale blubber is considered a delicacy in some countries and can be used to make products. The issue is that whales are endangered and some types are in danger of extinction.

EQ: how does whaling affect the ecosystem?

After digging around I have found some startling information. A study made in 2003 found that the whales affected a massive food chain. When whales numbers started to be depleted the killer whales/orcas that fed on them had to find new sources off protein. the when to seals and sealions first. When the sealions started to lose numbers, the sea urchins, that sea lions fed on started to consume kelp beds in massive quantities, and the kelp beds provide a home for many species. To give some numbers as of 2003 it was shown that sealion populations had gone down 80% in a period of thirty years.

A island connection

Have you ever been to a japanese restaurant and looked at the menu and looked really closely. If so then you would see that the majority of items are made out of fish. The reason? Japan's landscape had very few areas suitable for farming, that combined with it being an island makes fishing an easier option than farming. so it is understandable why the Japanese see whaling as a part of their culture. but that does not make whaling any less of a problem, for example when commercial whaling became illegal, the Japanese set up research whaling. some think they are actually using research whaling as a excuse to continue to provide the market with whale meet. Remember don't judge a book by it's cover

EQ: What are people doing to stop whaling?

In this world, there are more problems then there are solutions but for whaling this post might have some answers. through research I have found that some organization, like Greenpeace, are spreading the word about whaling and influencing people to get active in the problem. Others, like Zoomshare.com are boycotting Japanese goods. And even the Australian government is trying to stop whaling. Even you can make a difference, by writing a letter, sharing this information or even researching it, like we did.

What is ODEA?

ODEA, to put it simply is a student project. the goal of our four members is to answer a question, "what does whaling do for the ecosystem?", but to narrow it down we are focusing on Japan's whaling. To answer this we will have 5 smaller questions, a timeline of whaling, a disscusion with three different perspectives ether through words or a video. we will also de listing our resources, since we have had to dig to find info. So if you are interested in the topic but have douts about the information, look around, some one might have more accurate info than us.
